Monstro

The Interdimensional Space Whale

Collaboration - Peeking Portals by Boo Sparks @sparkscreationsco

Peeking Portals is an interactive art sculpture with multiversal possibilities. The installation encompasses diversity, inner beauty, change, and transformation. The mission of Peeking Portals is to create intimacy with the viewer and the artists. Only one eyeball at a time is able to peek into each portal creating an emotional synapse into the artist's dimension. The viewers will experience a uniquely intimate experience in each portal. The portals are a metaphor for the unique individual and the action of peeking is the metaphor for knowing the individual deeper.  All types of connection are invited; familiarity, discomfort, and synchronicity through peeking deeper.

MONSTRO

After peaking through the peeking portal deep into the multiverse we discovered
a being who can traverse through time and space to help guide our gaze deeper into unknown possible realities.
And now it is time that we help manifest into our reality, Monstro, the inter-dimensional space whale that travels through the various universes collecting samples of different environments and their inhabitants to be forever preserved within it. Black rock city participants will be given the opportunity to interact with and influence the sample of the human experiences it takes with it as it continues along its journey.

Philosophy

The philosophy behind Monstro is to give participants a perspective shift that allows participants to view their interactions on a micro-scale and a macro-scale and to view how their actions impact the people and animals around them. We hope that through this experience we might be able to help encourage individuals to be more mindful of their actions and how they interface with the world.

 Mission

The mission of Monstro is to swim the expieriencer through a diverse, intimate, and interactive art space.

By providing windows into alternate realities participants will be encouraged to view interactions between different species from different perspectives.

After viewing these environments as an outsider looking into different worlds in tiny boxes, earthlings will then enter the whale's head where they will find themselves inside a small box where they are now the life forms on display.

It is our hope that through this juxtaposition of being the observer and the observed that participants have meaningful interactions with whomever they meet inside and carry this newfound perspective out into the world with them so that they may be more mindful of how their actions impact all life forms around them.

 Physical Dimensions

The head of the whale will be between 10’ to 15’ tall with a footprint of roughly 14’ by 20’

Inside the head will be a small room roughly 10’ by 15’

The tail will stand between 15’ to 20’ tall.

Where tail that protrudes from the ground will have a rough diameter of 5’

The fins of the tail that overhang to provide shade will span between 6’ to 8’ and be about 3’ wide.

 Physical Description

Monstro, is a giant whale that appears to be swimming through the earth.

The Whale’s body will be composed of two main structures: a tail and a head, each sticking out of the ground across from each other.

The structures will be composed of  low polygon geometry with many flat faces. The inner structure of the whale will be made out of a steel frame and the outer faces will be composed of a combination of  wood and acrylic.

In the lower panels of the outer skin there will be small plexiglass windows that participants can peep into. Each window will be a view port into a unique universe. These universes will be dioramas that are handcrafted by various artists selected from open submissions that are available to the public.

Each diorama will depict a unique mini-verse that will serve as portals into alternate realities. After making their way around the outside of the whale, participants will be able to enter into the head through its mouth.

Inside the whale will be a small intimate space that will suggest to participants that they are now inside a mini-verse themselves.

Participants will be encouraged to interact with elements of the installation and each other while inside the whale. Participants will exit through the back of the whale, where the tail of the whale will overhang the playa to allow shade for participants to rest under.

 Interactivity

Upon discovering a whale that appears to be swimming through the desert, BRC participants can read a sign that explains Monstro is an inter-dimensional being that travels through different universes collecting samples of different environments in its mouth to be forever preserved in portals found on its skin. Participants will then be encouraged to walk around Monstro and peer into the many portals that encapsulate the many universes that Monstro has collected.  Monstro will have an open mouth calling participants to enter and slide down into the back of its throat. In the belly of the beast will be a more intimate space for interactions with the space and the being in it.  The room will be lined with soft squishy places for participants to lounge. The upper walls will be inscribed with statements and phrases that will aim to promote meaningful interactions between participants. Along the walls will be shelves and nooks for participants to add to the curation of the environment that Monstro will collect from and take with it. On the ceiling of the room will be one large eye looking in, that communicates to the participant that they are now inside a mini-verse and are now the ones being observed. The centerpiece of this room will be a large Helicone. A Helicone is a kinetic sculpture that is made up of segmented pieces that are stacked on a pole they can rotate around. When spun in one direction the Helicone will resemble a double helix and when spun in the other direction the double helix structure will explode into a random shape. The interaction of participants with the Helicone will be a representation of how humans are able to directly impact the evolution of species they come in contact with.
